West Erie County

Conditions:

Most of the area attention has turned to bass fishing. Bass fishing in and around Presque Isle and along the lake shore has been good to excellent. With bass boats beginning to fill area launches on the weekends. Crappie Crappie fishing continues to be fair to good along the South side of the Peninsula. A few boats have already been spotted off shore due north of the Presque Isle light house and North of the Walnut access in search of early season perch schools although no catch rates have been reported yet. Perch and rock bass have been hitting on shiners along both the North and south piers along the Erie channel and with the abundance of bait fish, the sheer numbers of perch and the size of the Lake, it was almost simply a matter of time before Pennsylvania State Record Perch the was reeled in. Suckers can be caught through out most of the slow moving pools on most of the area tribs and bass can be found near the access areas of the West County tribs. This is a good time of year to try the State line ponds for panfish, especially if you are looking for quiet out of the way fishing. The State line ponds are located just south of Interstate 90 along the PA. / OH. line. This is a great area for bank fishing and for small car top unpowered boats. Lake Erie water temperature is 52 degrees.

Walnut Creek Access Information:
The Walnut Creek Access office is now open full time for the season. Hours are Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM, Friday and Saturday 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sundays 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The docks and launch ramps are now in at the marina. Boaters as always are advised to watch depths entering and exiting the channel as wind and wave conditions can change conditions. Shore anglers are also again advised that boaters entering and exiting the channel have the absolute right of way over angler lines.

Walleye, Muskellunge, Northern Pike Seasons:
The season opened Saturday May 1st for Walleye, on Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay, and the Erie tribs. Daily creel limit is 6 fish with a minimum length of 15 inches.

Boat Registration:
Questions always come up early in the season regarding requirements for boat registration. The following offers guidelines for registration:
Boats propelled by machinery, including electric motors, must be registered, and they must properly display legible numbers and a boat registration validation decal. This includes all motorboats regardless of the boat's length and type of motor.

No other number may be displayed on either side of the bow. These numbers may not be removed, altered, tampered with, or defaced except by the owner or representative. Documented vessels, as well as kayaks, sculls, and other low-volume boats of similar design, are exempt from the display of numbers but they must display the validation decal. Inflatable boats may carry their numbers and validation decal on boards lashed to each side of the bow. Powered canoes are not exempt and must display the numbers and the decal.

Often, boaters tell us that they "just sent in their renewal" or "I have my canceled check" and is it okay to boat. The response to this is the boat is considered to be legally registered when the validation sticker is on the boat and the registration card is received and signed or an online renewal is in hand. A boat without a current validation sticker or renewal and numbers affixed to both sides the bow and a signed registration card are no more legal than an automobile without a current license plate sticker and signed registration card.

Unpowered boats using Commission lakes and access areas must be registered OR display a Commission use permit OR display a State Parks launch or mooring permit. Presque Isle State Park is an exception and does not require registration or a State Parks permit for unpowered boats

Boat titles are issued when a boat is sold or when ownership is conveyed. Titles are required for motorboats with a model year of 1997 and newer, except for those that are powered by an outboard motor that are less than 14 feet in length. All 1997 or newer personal watercraft, are also subject to the titling requirement. Voluntary titling is available for any other boat.
