West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:
Signs of Steelhead season have been evident with cool breezy nights and white cap days however, daytime temperatures have been very warm and we have had little to no rainfall for several weeks. Tributary levels are very low and apparently adversely affecting the early exploratory steelhead runs of late August. Anglers have started fishing the trib mouths, especially at Trout and Godfrey Runs, hooking an occasional jack or two but nothing of any size. Those that just can't wait might try the "Wall" at night at Walnut Creek. There have been a few confirmed catches, but only a few. Glow in dark Cleos and the Power baits are good night choices. A lighted float can help detect those subtle strikes. Anglers trolling the East end of the First Trench have been nailing 10#'ers on N/K Spoons. Good numbers of steelhead are "staging" in 40 to fifty feet of water. With a little cooperation from Mother Nature it won't be long.

Wind and waves permitting, perch fishing just seems to get better and better. This past weekend saw countless anglers bringing in limits in only a few hours. The perch packs off the light house beach and Walnut creek numbered in the hundreds this past Sunday. The parking lots at the Walnut Creek Access were filled beyond capacity this past holiday weekend. Walleye fishing has fallen off a bit however, there are still plenty to be had in our area.

Pennsylvania Steelhead Association Meeting Reminder:
The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association will be holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday September 12th at the American Legion on West 12th street (route 5 near the Airport) at 7:00 PM. The public is welcome. The club will be holding their annual Big Run Banquet on Saturday, September 29th. Tickets can be requested electronically by emailing psa@pasteelhead.org or you can get them at Poor Richards East or West stores, Folly's End Camp Grounds and Fish USA (ask for Brian). This is a huge event is a must attend event for the avid steelhead angler with great food, prizes, raffles, demonstrations and more.

Handling a Boat in Stormy Waters and High Wave Conditions :

The Fall fishing and boating season on Lake Erie can often bring unexpected surprises to the inexperienced boater. With the transition from Summer to Fall come rapid changes in weather and fast moving fronts mostly from the West. Consider the following in rough waters:

1) Maneuver so the boat takes the initial and heaviest winds on the bow, not abeam. (The smaller the boat, the more
important it is to head into the wind.)

2) Waves should be approached at a 45-degree angle. This will help keep the propeller underwater and reduce pounding.

3) In moderate waves, slow your speed so you can ride atop and over a wave. Avoid driving the bow into a wave or riding
to the top of the wave and falling off the back, which could bury the bow.

4) Remember ... the heavier the seas, the slower your boat speed to minimize strain on the vessel and maximize
steering control.

5) Continue to keep the bilge free of water to prevent the rolling effects of sloshing water below.
