WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, DWCO Brook Tolbert|
Perch and Walleye fishing has picked up and many are saying that overall catches have been the best of the season. A number of anglers have reported limits of perch over the past week. North of Walnut Creek in 52 to 55 feet and 62-65 North of the point on Presque Isle are the hot spots. The large schools of last year seem to have finally settle in.
Walleye fishing has been good to excellent although anglers are still sifting through the smaller ones to get their limit. The first trench North and West to the Ohio line in 65 feet of water has been very productive over the last week.
Steelhead catches have been common bonuses for anglers trolling for walleye.
The tribs remain very low and clear and daytime ambient temperatures have been unseasonably warm. Although there have been a few steelhead moving in and out of the mouths, there really hasn’t been any significant activity. A few anglers have been observed trying their luck at night along the Walnut Creek Access wall, but catches have been few. There are a good number of steelhead staging off the mouth of trout run and a few have actually entered the nursery waters.
Current Lake Erie average water temperatures 72 degrees off Toledo, 71 degrees off Cleveland, and 71 degrees off Erie. The Erie Tribs remain very low and clear with rain and cool nights needed to jumpstart any significant steelhead movement.
New Area Officers:
Two of our most respected area officers have taken on new assignments and have been replaced by new officers. WCO Tom Edwards from the Central Erie County district has been promoted to Assistant Region Manager for the Northwest Pennsylvania Region. Officer Edwards will be working mainly out of the Region office in Meadville along with Assistant Region Manager Tom Tarkowski and Region Manager Bob Nestor. These individuals round out a strong management team for Northwest Pennsylvania that has a keen familiarity with our area and a hands on approach that should be a benefit to all area anglers. WCO Mark Kerr will be leaving the East Erie County District and has accepted a district position closer to his home area in Warren. These officers leave there positions with admiration and best wishes from their respective deputy staff.
The Central Erie County district vacancy has been filled by WCO Edward Stuart from Indiana Pennsylvania and the East Erie County vacancy has been filled by WCO James Smolko from Petersburg Pennsylvania

The PA Steelhead Association will have its monthly meeting beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2005. Note the new location - meetings will be held at the West Lake Bar and Grill banquet room at 4102 West Lake Road (Alternate Route 5) in Erie. The public is welcome.
Anglers are advised that the Trout Run Marina and its parking area will again be closed this year and most likely permanently at this point. Parking along Avonia Road near the mouth will be congested as it was last year. Avonia or Route 98 is a state road, not a local road, and as such is governed by the PSP. Anglers are advised to heed parking hours and other signage posted in this area. Blocking right of ways in this or any other area is subject to fine and/or having your vehicle towed.
