Heat, humidity, and HOT fishing! Wow has the fishing off of Ashtabula, OH ever taken off. This heat wave that has set in has made water temperatures soar and has triggered the Walleyes and Steelheads big time!
This past weekend it was like old times. Sunday we were limited out by 10:30 a.m. The Walleyes are a nice mix of size ranging from just keepers to some real monsters. On Saturday we had one Walleye that went 32 inches and was almost 11 pounds.

We are now getting plenty of the undersize fish from the 2003 record hatch. Most of these fish are just shy of the 15” minimum size requirement. I figure by mid July a lot of these fish will start making the grade. We are still fishing mostly west of Ashtabula but not that far from shore. At this time the magic depth seems to be 58 to 62 feet of water. Best action by far has been in the very early morning. By mid day it dies down to next to nothing. On Sunday we were headed out at 5:00 a.m. and it paid off big. I urge all of my charters to be at the dock and ready to cast off no later than 5:30 a.m. It’s that important to get in on the early morning bite!

Also just like somebody just flipped a switch, we are now taking one or two Steelhead each day as well. How exciting when one of those bullets hits! All of ours have come on the bigger Michigan spoons. This fishing will also only get better with each passing day as we start to edge our way further and further from shore.

And now for a shameless plug, we have one day that is still open for this month that I need to fill. That date is Monday, June 20th. If anyone is interested, please call me on my boat/mobile number at 216-387-2656. The fishing is awesome right now and should only get better with each passing day. Man, I think we are in for a heck of a summer!

Capt. Walt
