Hey, we’re home! “The Trophy” pulled in to her homeport of Ashtabula, OH last Monday. The weather, as if to welcome us home, has gone straight into summer like conditions. Seas have been relatively calm, and air temps have been in the 80’s.

We’ve already run a handful of Walleye trips, and just like the past years, the early trips have provided some monster fish. Although the overall numbers could be better, the quality has been excellent. Each day we have caught at least one monster Walleye that went 30 inches or better! Best action has been to the west of Ashtabula harbor in water running from 45 to 60 feet. Most Walleye are being caught off of the boards using #40 Jet Divers and Stinger Spoons. Leads from 70 to 140 feet back have all caught us fish with the most consistent at around 90 feet.

The new Raymarine digital E Series High Definition fishfinder continues to show the Walleyes suspended in the now deeper water of the central basin along with tons of baitfish. What an awesome fishfinder this unit has proven to be. In 19 years of chartering, this unit has become the most precise, astonishing display that I have ever experienced. What a show!

I have yet to catch my first Steelhead. The fish must be way off shore. No problems yet with the smaller undersize Walleyes either that we were plagued with the last couple of weeks that I was in Port Clinton. I expect that to change as well. Quite a few smaller white bass and Sheephead have been showing up already. Oh boy, here we go again with those guys!

We still have a handful of open dates for Ashtabula Walleye. I can be reached on my cell phone 216-387-2656.

Good Fishing
Capt. Walt
