Unbelievable! That’s the only way to describe the way the Walleye fishing out of Ashtabula, Oh is shaping up this June. After having a really strong finish out at Port Clinton the last week of May, we’ve long since re-located the boat but have not missed a beat! In fact, I can’t remember the last year that first part of June was this good. All of our first charters back at Ashtabula earlier this month finished up in the “teens” and this past week we limited out every day!

The picture shown here is Greg Westmeyer’s group with 39 Walleyes and a Chinook Salmon caught on 6/21/03 aboard the “The Trophy” just off shore of Ashtabula, OH. This was the norm all of last week. This group had over 60-lbs. of fillets and we were back before 2:00 p.m.! In fact I had Greg again the next day and we did a limit again. Awesome. Each day we’ve had at least 1 fish go over 30’ with lots of 28 and 29 inchers. Best of all there is a wide range of year classes of the fish showing up which is great for future years. Curiously, we caught a few Steelhead the first week we were back but have not hooked any at all the last couple of weeks. They must all be way offshore. Last year we were doing limits of Steelhead about this time along with our Walleyes.

Best lures have still been the Michigan Stingers fished off of the planer boats with Jet Divers. We’ve found schools of fish anywhere from 30 ft. clear out to 60 ft. Early mornings have been the best. I encourage all of my charters to be ready to roll no later than 5:30 a.m.

The fishing should only get better as the summer progresses. We’ve waited a long time for a year like this!

Capt. Walt
