BOATING SAFETY EDUCATION GRANT APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH ODNR COLUMBUS, OH -- Applications for the 2004 boating safety education grants are currently available through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Deadline for submitting the applications is November 7. "These grants, ranging from $500 to $30,000 each, help establish, develop, expand, maintain and promote boating safety programs statewide," said Ken Alvey, chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft. Grants are awarded yearly on a cost-share basis with the applicant matching at least 25 percent of the total program cost. Boating safety education grants are funded through the state's Waterways Safety Fund, which is comprised of boat registration fees, a portion of the state gasoline tax, as well as funding from the U.S. Coast Guard. Boating education grant workshops will be held September 17 in Columbus to provide assistance to grant applicants. Boating safety grant applications may be obtained by calling 1-877-4BOATER and by visiting the ODNR's web site at ohiodnr.com
